Web Home Page: Rondebult, one of South Africa's premier urban bird sanctuaries, was officially opened to the public in 1978. Comprising open water, march, reed beds and open grassland, this wetland is particularly well known for the diversity of waterbird species it attract. A list of all species observed would run to more than 150, many of which have bred in the 94 ha sanctuary. A visit to Rondebult is highly recommended. Location: South-central Gauteng; Germiston. Access: From central Germiston follow the N3 southwards as far as the R103/R554 exit and take this in the direction of Heidelberg; where the R103 and R554 diverge, follow the R554 to the left, into Van Dyk Rd, and shortly after crossing the railway line watch for signposts to the sanctuary on the right. Accommodation: None. Other facilities: Bird-watching hides; short walks. Guided visits can be arranged through the Witwatersrand Bird Club or the Wildlife Society. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: 08h00 to 17h00 (arrangements can be made for an extension of these hours).
